第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A,B,C和D项中,选出最佳选项并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
In the United States, friendships can be close, constant, intense, generous and real, yet fade (暗淡下来)away in a short time if circumstances change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left off and are delighted.
In the States, you can feel free to visit people’s homes, share their holidays, enjoy their lives without fear that you are taking on a lasting obligation(负担). Do not hesitate to accept hospitality (热情款待)because you can’t give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are far from home. Americans will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospitality easily.
Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full and warm and real. Most visitors find themselves readily invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain at home, offering what is felt as only home-cooked food, not “doing something for you guest”. It is felt that restaurant entertaining shows more respect and welcome. Or for other different reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes.
In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one’s home than to go a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess brings you home, do not feel that you are being shown inferior (差的)treatment.
Don’t feel neglected (被轻视的)if you do not find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room, either. Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery is uncertain, arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled—flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward signs vary in different lands; the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real. 26.In the United States, you will find friendships _________ if circumstances change.
A. die suddenly B. pass away C. disappear gradually D. last forever
2
27. Americans _________ their foreign friends to make a return for their hospitality. A. ask B. wish C. never allow D. don’t except\\ 28. In some other countries, giving a dinner party at home is considered ________than in a restaurant.
A. less friendly B. less hospitable C. more natural D. more popular 29. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Flowers are available at all time. B. Flowers are expensive. C. Flowers are signs of outward welcome. D. Flowers are not necessarily sent to guests.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some form ---- football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure. Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
31. What movements are popular among people in winter in the passage? A. Soccer and golf. B. Skiing and skating. C. Cycling and hockey. D. Mountaineering.
32. The underlined word “passion”(Para. 2) could best be replaced by ________. A. strong emotion B. depression C. feeling D. astonishment 33. Mountaineering is a sport, not a game because ________.
3
A. it has man-made rules B. it is too dangerous for climbers C. it can’t bring people joy and leisure D. it is free for climbers to use their own methods
34. A mountain climber must be strong both mentally and physically because _______. A. there are no regular man-made rules for him to follow B. there is no teamwork and he has to depend on himself
C. his component is not one or several people but the powerful nature D. mountaineering requires the skills practiced year after year 35. We know from the passage that _______. A. mountaineering has no appeal to people
B. physical quality is more important than mental one for climbers C. it is possible for an old man of fifty or sixty to climb the Alps D. a mountain climber would pass his best by the age of thirty

All things change except barbers, the ways of barbers, and the surroundings of barbers. These never change. What one experiences in a barber’s shop the first time he enters one is what he always experiences in barbers’ shops afterward till the end of his days. W
I got shaved this morning as usual. A man approached the door from Jones Street as I approached it from Main--a thing that always happens. I hurried up, but it was of no use; he entered the door one little step ahead of me, and I followed in and saw him take the only empty chair, the one headed by the best barber. It always happens so. I sat down, hoping that I might sit in the chair belonging to the better of the remaining two barbers, for he was a bit ahead. I watched the probabilities with strong interest. When I saw that No. 2 was gaining on No. 1, my interest grew to solicitude (孤单). When No. 1 was gradually losing the race, my solicitude rose to anxiety. When No. 1 caught up again, and both were about to finish and say “Next!” first, my very breath stood still with the suspense. But when I saw that he had lost the race by a single instant, I rose angrily and quitted the shop, to keep from falling into the hands of No. 2; for I have none of that firmness that enables a man to look calmly into the eyes of a waiting barber and tell him he will wait for his fellow-barber’s chair.
I stayed out fifteen minutes, and then went back, hoping for better luck. Unfortunately, all the chairs were occupied now, and four men sat waiting, silent, and looking bored, as men always do who are waiting their turn in a barber’s shop. I sat down and waited.
At last my turn came. A voice said “Next!” and I give in to No. 2, of course. It always happens so. I smiled and said that I was in a hurry, and it affected him as strongly as if he had never heard it.
He explored my hair with his claws and suggested that it needed trimming(修剪). I said I did not want it trimmed. He explored again and said it was pretty long for the present style. I said I had had it cut only a week before. He stopped for a moment, and then asked “who cut it?” I stared at him from the mirror and replied “You did!” Then a dog-fight attracted his attention, and he ran to the window and

38. The author chose “No. 2” in the end, because ________.
A. he had no choice B. he was in a hurry

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.______
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two
5
windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),”he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
41. The main subject talked about in this passage is_____________.
A. science on learning a second languageB. man's ability of learning a second language
C. language can help brain power D. language learning and maths study
42. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to_____________.
A. say language is also a kind of physical labor
B. prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language C. to show the importance of using the language when you learn the language
D. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well 43. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means_____________.
A. a researcher on language learning B. a second language learner C. a person who can speak two languages D. an active language learner 44. We may know from the scientific findings that_____________.
A. the earlier you start to learn a second language the higher the grey matter density is
B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn't know a second language
C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people's brain D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time 45. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that_____________.
A. learning a second language is the same as studying maths
B. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in study other subjects
C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
D. you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language 第二节 信息匹配 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。请在答题卡上将对应题号的相应选项字

Facing the Trials of Life
A boy complained about difficulties in life. His grandmother, who showed that a cake’s materials tasted awful but the cake itself is tasted delicious, taught him that the trials of life make people stronger.
From the story I have learned that the trials of life are of great importance in our growth. As the saying goes, “No cross, no crown.” Only by facing and overcoming difficulties in our life can we grow up happily and healthily.
It reminds me of my own experience when I joined in the military training after I entered senior high school. It was the first time I had lived away from my home, so I found it difficult to fit in. But the trials made it easier for me to adapt to life in senior high school, and the difficulties I came across have now become a precious memory in my life.
In a word, life consists of not only sunshine but also hard times. We should be brave in front of difficulties. Let’s learn to use the trials of life we are facing as a stepping-stone to future success!
