Tea culture in China and Britain

1.history:

Britain: China tea was introduced to Britain in the coffeehouse of London in 1660. At that time, tea was mainly consumed by rich people. In 1662, Portugal Princess Catherine known as the Queen of tea, married to Charles S. Due to her advocacy and promotion, as well as the increase of tea import, tea flourished in Britain, from upper class and middle upper class to ordinary people.

China: As the hometown of tea, China is the first to find, use and plant tea around the world. It is said that Chinese became to drink tea earlier than Han Dynasty, and the art of tea developed quickly in Jin Dynasties{唐陆羽}.

2.Kind of tea

In Britain, people favor black tea served with milk. Builder’ tea is a kind of strong tea served with milk and sugar. Cream tea is clotted cream served on scones, usually with strawberry jam and trifle.

In China, we have green tea, oolong tea, white tea, yellow tea and red tea. They are all popular with Chinese.

3Usage

In Britain, people drink tea as a relaxation. They drink tea several times a day,

in the morning, on a break at work, at afternoon tea or in the evening.

In China, people use tea not only to drink, but also use it as drug. It can strengthen our body and treat some diseases if we drink tea regularly everyday. Besides, we also enjoy the rich taste of tea and edify sentiment (陶冶情趣). And brewing tea is also a kind of art and technique.

3.drinking habit

In Britain, it is a proper manner in which to drink tea when using a cup and saucer. If one is seated at a table, the proper manner to drink tea is to raise the teacup only, placing it back into the saucer in between sips. When standing or sitting in a chair without a table, one holds the tea saucer with the off hand and the tea cup in the dominant hand. When not in use, the tea cup is placed back in the tea saucer and held in one's lap or at waist height. In either event, the tea cup should never be held or waved in the air.

In China, we have a series of tea equipment, especially congou tea. There are many different ways of brewing Chinese tea depending on different regions and formality of the occasion. For example, Chaou brewing, a method served in informal situations, consists of a lid, cup, and a saucer. Congou Tea is much formal and has more equipment and procedure.

Besides, in China, different meanings are attached to the toast of tea. When a young man or a junior person toasts a cup of tea to an old man or superior man,

he shows respect or thanks. And during a marriage, the couples toast a cup of tea to their parents to express gratitude.

4.Similarities

Tea has become an important part of both Chinese and British. And both Chinese and British regard it as a enjoyment and relaxation.

5.Difference

Tea in Chinese has much more usages and meaning than that in Britain. And Chinese attach merits to it.

Chinese do enjoy tea’s original taste so we do not add sugar or milk to tea like many British.
