A

Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition,

they will be able to use emails to“speak”with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant

or under the trees—anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop used in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how

laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too. At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said,“Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a_window_on_the_world. They can see everything and do everything.”

Computers are very important to modern life. Many people think that in the future computers will be used in lots of everyday life. It is thought that we won't have to go shopping because we will be able to get most things which are sold in shops on the Internet. There will be no more books because we will be able to get all texts from computers. The Internet will be used to play games, see films and buy food. Most telephone calls will be made by computers, too.

Some people are glad about these new ways of shopping and communicating. Others do not think that computers will replace our old ways.

Let's look at books, for example. Some people think that one day we will not read books made of paper. Instead, we will buy and read books using computers. We will read text on small pocket computers. The computers will keep many different books in them at the same time. We won't need to turn lots of pages and paper will be saved. Computerized(计算机化)books will be used more and more.

Is Internet shopping such a pleasure as going to the shop? Many people say it is not. It is a pleasure to go into shops and look at things you want to buy. It is also unlikely (不大可能) that many people will want to read large texts on our computers. Because paper books will perhaps be more friendly. Maybe computers won't change these two habits.

If you've been joining in chat room conversations, or trading e-mail with net pals(网友), you have become one of the millions who write in a special, short form of English.

Throughout the world, every night children and their elders are “talking” online—many of them are talking at the same time.

It's fast: trying talking to six people once. It's convenient: three or four words per exchange. It takes cleverness, concentration and quick fingers.

And it requires very simple language. There's neither time nor space for explanations. Why waste valuable time telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB (=be right back) will do?

Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (=pardon me for jumping in).

Interested in whom you're talking to? Type A/S/L, the common request to know your pal's age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a reply from your pal.

If something makes you laugh, say you're OTF (=on the floor), or LOL (=laughing out loud), or join the two into ROTFL (=rolling on the floor laughing).

And when it's time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (=got to go) or TTYL (=talk to you later).

People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing feeling, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and use capitals. Punctuation (标点) is going too.

1.When people are online, they talk by ________. A.using body language

B.drawing some strange pictures C.making phone calls

D.making use of an especially short form of English 答案:D 细节理解题。从第一段you have become one of the millions who write in a special, short form of English.

2.The sentence “There's neither time nor space for explanations” means that ________. A.people should use words properly

B.people should know what time it is when they are talking C.people online have to express themselves in a simple way D.people should communicate in a funny way

And it requires very simple language.

3.If you get 17/F/NY as an answer to your A/S/L, it means ________. A.the people on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fine B.you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New York C.you are talking to 17 girls who are from New York D.the people you are talking to is a 17-foot tall New York girl

A.People seldom use capital letters or punctuation marks. B.Many people draw pictures.

C.People only use the mouse instead of the keyboard. D.People never use the “shift” key. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing feeling, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and use capitals. Punctuation (标点) is going too. 选A。
