When you hear the name Leonardo da Vinci, what comes to mind? Maybe his paintings, Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Maybe it's his flying machine invention. When I think of this great man, I think of the term “Renaissance Man”. Why? The term “Renaissance Man” comes from fifteenth-century Italy and refers to the idea of a person with knowledge and skills in a number of different areas. Perhaps, no single individual xkw defines the idea of a Renaissance man better than Leonardo da Vinci-an artist, scientist, architect, engineer and inventor.

Leonardo da Vinci will most likely go down in history for his famous works as an artist. But,did you know that he spent a significant amount of time working on his endeavors in science and technology? Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most productive inventors in history. Some of his most famous inventions are the flying machine, the parachute and the revolving bridge. Leonardo has also been given credit by historians for many more inventions.

Once in the courtyard of Senor Ludovico, Leonardo da Vinci constantly invented various “labour-saving devices” for use in the kitchen. At the same time, he began to keep notebooks. The funny thing was that most of the drawings found there, which for several hundred years were considered by researchers to be mechanisms for military (军事) operations, in fact, turned out to be quite peaceful meat grinders, dishwashers, mechanical devices for cracking nuts. The restless Leonardo invented the manual garlic press, which has remained virtually unchanged to our day, a foot-operated napkin dryer, an egg cutter, and many other useful things.

But his most important discovery is the invention of spaghetti. Of course, pasta (意大利面食) has existed in Italy since ancient time. But it was a hard and very broad substance, like a heavy lump of lasagna (面块). Leonardo changed the shape of the pasta, making a machine that cut it into long thin strips, which after boiling turned into spaghetti.

21. Leonardo da Vinci is mentioned as “Renaissance Man” for his _ A. individual ideas

B. diverse talents C. representative works D. birth time and place

22. What is known about his inventions in the courtyard of Senor Ludovico? A. They were practical for everyday use. B. They reached record high at that time. C. They have remained unchanged to our day. D. They were intended for military operations. 23. In what way did Leonardo da Vinci change pasta? A. Taste. B. Color. C. Fragrance. D. Shape.

B

Fractional ownership is a percentage ownership of a specific asset (资产). It has often been used to share the ownership of expensive assets such as expensive boats, private planes and so on. When the value of the asset increases, the ownership shares do as well. Co-owners also share equally the costs carried by the asset. Most recently, the same concept of fractional ownership was applied to art as well. The logic is the same. Multiple people own one artwork and share the benefits and the costs of the asset. Galleries and artists, instead of selling one artwork to one person, they can sell it to more than 1000 art lovers.

Co-ownership of art gives the possibility to everyone to participate in the art market. The potential market for artworks is suddenly way bigger. Only a few people can afford artworks that cost more than £100,000. But everyone can afford to buy some shares priced at £10 each. On top of this, all co-owners share the costs involved with the acquisition of an artwork. For art lovers that are just starting to collect art for investment (投资) reasons, co-ownership of art can be a great tool to start learning and understanding the market without risking too much capital. For big collectors instead, sharing the ownership of an artwork is an easy way to diversify their portfolio (投资组合) without having the burden of managing the asset.

For many years only wealthy people could afford to buy expensive artworks. Because of this, most artworks are hidden in private collections and dark storages since decades where the public has no access to. And, if we think that art is supposed to deliver important messages and topics and is the representation of our

past and present, it seems incredible that art has become something that few people can fully enjoy. Fractional ownership of art, by giving everyone the possibility to co-own art, has the power to greatly change this. Suddenly, art becomes an asset available to everyone and, by being more accessible, it starts to attract way more people.

24.Which of the following is a kind of fractional ownership? A. A wealthy businessman owns a private ship. B. A museum event is attended by 1000 art lovers. C. Galleries and artists sold one artwork to one person. D. 10 friends bought a house priced at S10,000 together. 25.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The potential market for artworks. B. The source of capital for investment. C. The benefit of fractional ownership. D. The development of fractional ownership. 26.What might the author agree to? A. Art contributes greatly to social economy. B. Co-ownership of art benefits the general public. C. Only wealthy people could afford expensive artworks. D. Fractional ownership is a way to invest without risk.

C

The public nowadays has a misunderstanding of forest fires, believing that fires should be kept out of every type of forest. Many of us can recall Smoky the Bear's famous warning: “Remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires”. However, that's not always the case. Under the right conditions, and when conducted safely, fire can create many environmental benefits as well as help prevent larger, uncontrollable wildfires.

After a forest fire, many wildlife species will move into recently burned areas to feed on these newly available foods. Some reptiles and amphibians such as the pine (松树) snake prefer forests frequently burned by fire. As Herbert Stoddard put it, “One of the most harmful things modern man has done to birds has been his attempt to exclude fire from fire-type pine forests. Within a few years most forests choke up with bushes, lose their prairie-like vegetation (草原般植被) and can no longer support birds dependent on periodic burning for their food supply and proper cover.”

If you are asked to picture the forest floor, what do you see? Pine needles, cones, leaves, branches might come to mind-all sources of fuel. If these fuel sources build up without any type of removal, the 'fuel load' can lead to fires catastrophic to forests and people alike. In contrast, prescribed fire can be used by forest professionals every couple of years to keep forest fuels at an appropriate and manageable level. They can also minimize the spread of pest insects and disease and remove unwanted tree and plant species. Plus, they can create and maintain important wildlife habitats rich in grasses and promote the growth of trees, wildflowers and other various plants.

Many organizations and agencies work to promote fire on the landscape when and where appropriate. Smokey Bear even has an updated warning: “Only You can Prevent Wildfires,” as the Forest Service has over the last few decades developed policies and procedures to include prescribed fire as a management tool, as well as continuing their work to prevent and fight wildfires. 27.Why did the author mention Smoky the Bear's warning? A. To introduce the topic of the passage. B. To clarify a misunderstood concept. C. To show the significance of fire prevention. D. To raise people's awareness of forest protection. 28. What can benefit birds according to Herbert Stoddard? A. Forest bushes. B. Fuel sources. C. Pine forests. D. Periodic burning.

29. What is the purpose of prescribed fire? A. To put out wildfires. B. To keep the forest balance. C. To remove tree and plant species. D. To keep the fuel rich in the forest.

30. What might be the best title for the passage? A. One Match Can Start A Forest Fire B. Where There Is Smoke There Is A Fire C. Not All Forest Fires Are Created Equal

D. Why Not Keep The Forest Fire Burning 21-23BAD 24-26DCB 27-30ADBC

A retired postman from Turkey and a beautiful white swan have been inseparable for nearly four decades, and the story of their amazing friendship has melted the hearts of millions.

When Recep Mirzan spotted a wounded swan in a field in Turkey’s Edirne province, in 1984, he had no idea that he was about to meet his best friend. He was in a car with a group of friends, when he spotted a swan that appeared to have a broken wing in an empty field. Mirzan quickly realized that leaving the bird there was the same as signing its death sentence, as predators (捕食者) would have most likely eaten it, so he stopped the car and took the bird with him. He took it home and started nursing it back to health.

“Since I love animals,I took her home instead of leaving her as food to foxes,’’ Mirzan told The Associated Press. 4tWe got used to each other. We never separated.59 Even after the female swan's broken wing healed, it didn5t try to fly away. Instead, it befriended the other animals on Recep’s farm in the Karaagac region, and decided to stick around. Recep named her Garip, and she has been with him for the last 37 years.

“She comes when I call. Since 1984, she has never left me, not even during the river floods,” the retired postman told Anadolu News Agency. \"She used to be more vigorous, but she has grown old now. If she dies, I will make her a nice grave here, but I hope we live more together.”

Garip has her own coop on Mirzan’s farm, but she mostly spends nights in it. During the day, she is busy following her human friend around, either during his daily chores, or on his evening walks.

After his wife died a few years ago, Recep Mirzan started spending more time with his animals, and since he has no human children, he regards Garip as his child.

Whooper swans can live for decades in protected environments, but Garip has long surpassed the average lifespan for her species.

21. Why did Recep save the swan according to the passage? A. He felt extremely lonely.

B. The swan was a rare animal. C. He was a real animal lover. D. The swan was being followed by foxes.

22. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.

A. the swan stayed with Recep at night after the death of his wife B. Garip lived a longer life probably because of the care of Recep C. Recep’s friends directly signed the wounded swan death sentence

D. Recep was sure to meet a lifelong friend when he spotted the wounded swan 23. What might be the best title for the text?

A. A Retired Postman’s Story Has Melted the Hearts of Millions B. Man and Swan Have Been Best Friends for the Last 37 Years C. A Wounded Swan Has Befriended the Other Animals on a Farm D. Humans Have Made Efforts to Protect the Environments for Swans

UK-based supermarket Waitrose has been accused by social media users for selling tree leaves at 6 pounds. Photos of various tree leaves packaged in plastic bags and arranged as flower bouquets (花束) went hot on social media lately, causing complaints because of the product’s price, six British pounds. Considering tree leaves can literally be picked up from the street this time of year, ifs understandable that some people went after Waitrose, accusing the supermarket of trying to make money by selling something that is actually free.

“A bag of actual leaves? I’ll sell you a bin bag of leaves for 10 pence,” one customer wrote.

“This has got to be from the drunk Monday morning meeting category of ideas,5, someone else commented. Apparently, the unusual bouquets appeared on Waitrose supermarket shelves as a way to welcome autumn, and featured a sticker urging customers to “bring the outdoors inside”. ''Brighten up your home with freshly picked flowers whose pleasant scents refresh the season,95 the official product description read. “We source the best blooms from expert growers, and handle them gently so that they can look beautiful for longer.”

Despite the generally negative feedback on its autumn-themed product, the British supermarket proudly announced that the idea was inspired at the beginning of autumn by a demand from shoppers. ^Whatever we intend to offer, we base our decision on the demands from customers. Our customers love using these leaves to mix in with their seasonal flowers to brighten their homes,” a Waitrose spokesperson told The Sun.

Interestingly, there were those who seemed to somewhat justify the price tag of this bag of leaves. They said that those were obviously ‘‘high quality leaves”. Their claim might be true. But even a bottle of wine can be bought at the same price or less. It seems crazy to charge 6 pounds for a bag of leaves. 24. Why was Waitrose accused by social media? A. Failing to offer high quality flowers. B. Picking up tree leaves from the street. C. Carrying out seemingly drunk ideas. D. Selling free tree leaves at high prices.

25. We can learn from the passage that____________. A. tree leaves packaged in plastic bags were not fresh B. the unusual bouquets were intended to greet autumn

C. the supermarket withdrew tree leaves due to negative feedback D. the idea of selling tree leaves was inspired by the expert growers 26. What seems to be the writer’s attitude toward selling tree leaves at 6 pounds? A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Reserved. D. Disapproving.

The joy of giving is real, according to a study. Research presented in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who receive gifts.

Researchers conducted two studies last year. In one, participants were given $5 every day for five days and were required to spend the money on the same thing each day. Some participants were required to spend the money on themselves, while others were required to give to make a donation to charity. In a second experiment that was done online, participants played 10 rounds of a word puzzle game and each won 5 cents per round, which they could keep or donate.

In both experiments, participants reported their overall happiness. Those who donated their money

showed that their happiness declined at a much slower rate than those who kept the money or spent it on themselves.

The researchers note that when people focus on an outcome, they can easily compare outcomes, which may diminish their sensitivity to each experience. When people focus on an action, they may focus less on

comparison and instead experience each act of giving as a unique happiness-inducing event. Further analyses ruled out some potential alternative explanations, such as the possibility that participants who gave to others had to think longer and harder about what to give, which could promote higher happiness.

The results are especially interesting because according to one of the researchers, Ed O’Brien of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, they conflict with past research. “If you want to sustain happiness over time, past research tells us that we need to take a break from what we5re currently consuming and experience something new. Our research reveals that the kind of thing may matter more than assumed: Repeated giving, even in identical ways to identical others, may continue to feel relatively fresh and relatively pleasurable the more we do it,” O’Brien said.

So for all the holiday gifts you give this season, expect to feel happy and know that feeling is going to stick around for a while.

27. What’s the function of the first paragraph? A. To lead to the topic.

B. To highlight the importance of the study. C. To recommend a journal.

D. To persuade people to give gifts regularly. 28. Why did the researchers do two experiments? A. To challenge the past research. B. To rule out different experimental data. C. To show the benefits of donation. D. To make the conclusion more convincing.

29. What does the underlined word “diminish” probably mean in the fourth paragraph? A. Develop. B. Show. C. Reduce. D. Lack. 30. What’s the main finding of the new study?

A. Gift giving will result in longer happiness than receiving.

B. Thinking longer and harder on giving will promote higher happiness. C. The feeling of happiness will disappear soon if people just give holiday gifts. D. Taking a break from what we5re currently consuming will sustain happiness. 21. C 22. B 23. B 24. D 25. B 26. D 27. A 28. D 29. C 30. A

I'm not a full-time traveler. I spend most days working to earn a living just like you do. But whenever a chance arises for me to visit a far-off country, I jump at it.

When studying abroad in New Zealand, I traveled extensively all over the country with two friends. We booked everything from whale watching to a private flight over the Southern Alps, and racked up some impressive credit card bills. Another international student almost looked down her nose at our pricey adventures, declaring that she had come to New Zealand to study, not to empty her savings account on travel.

My question to her came. Why would you come halfway around the world to save your money and keep your nose pressed into a book every weekend? Would you go to China and not visit the Great Wall because it consumes money? Would you go to Italy and skip visiting the Vatican because it requires an admission ticket?

I know where I would like my life to go in the coming months and years. But there are no guarantees that things will go as planned. Practically, nothing will go as planned.

“Oh, I’ll travel when I retire.\" ’’I’ll travel when the kids are grown.” \"I’ll travel when the house is paid off.” How often we hear others say these? I hear these excuses all the time. But you know what occurs? Age. And stress. And, well, life. Life happens and by that time, you have bad knees and weak lungs and you simply cannot visit all those places you dreamed about in your youth. How sad! I don't want to end up like that, holding on to youthful travel dreams that will never be reality.

So I often think, what if ’’sometime later’’ never came?

So if you are privileged enough to be able to afford to travel, then you should attack it with curiosity and energy and a sense of adventure.

So travel young, and travel far.

21. Why did the author mention his travel experience in New Zealand? A. To prove his belief in travel. B. To show his enthusiasm for travel. C. To attract readers' attention. D. To recall a wonderful experience.

22. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. The excuses for failing to travel far. B. The absolute barriers in the future life. C. The uncertainties of future for travel. D. The regrets of missing some journeys. 23. Why is the author's writing purpose?

A. To circulate the advantages of travel. B. To share his own travel experience. C. To convince readers to travel young. D. To criticize the economical students.

The great thing about libraries is that they house all types of books --- from mysteries to biography and dramas --- all in one location. The bad thing about libraries is that they house all types of books in one location, and if it's a location you cannot get to, you are out of luck. Now, mobile library solutions are appearing quickly around the country to bring books to people who need them.

A few years ago, when the Little Free Libraries Movement kicked off, more people of all ages could have access to books. Now, more than 1,5000 free book stands can be found across the globe, bringing books to unexpected places. But many folks are simply not in a position to get to the places where the books are. Bookmobile buses are a good solution, but they can be expensive to fund and to operate.

Books on Bikes programs are popping up in areas where there is a strong bike culture, in some regions like Seattle, or a strong need to bring books to the masses, for example, in San Francisco.

The Seattle Public Library's Books on Bike program consists of three bike / trailer combos (组 that librarians bring to community events. The trailers are even Wi-Fi enabled so that visitors can sign up for a library card and browse (浏览)the library's card catalogue on the spot.

“Seattle has a really strong bike culture so we want to tap into that and provide full service library programs but do it in a way that is quick and smart,f, librarian Jared Mills said in an interview.

San Francisco's program, called Bibliobicicleta, was launched in 2013 by librarian Alicia Tapia. Her trailer can hold about 100 books and attracts readers of all ages and income levels. It's an independent, donation-based library --- like a Little Free Library, but on wheels.

When asked why she would start a free library on a bike, Tapia answers, “Why not? Bikes are cool, and can go anywhere.”

24. What is the passage mainly about ? A. Free libraries on bikes. B. Unique bicycle cultures. C. Popular online libraries. D. Various library movements.

25. The underlined words in paragraph 5 are closest in meaning to______________. A. come up with B. stay in touch with C. keep pace with D. take advantage of 26. What did Tapia think of the program? A. Environment-friendly. B. Practical. C. Controversial. D. Profitable.

More than one in five species of maple trees faces extinction, a shocking new report has revealed. The trees are experiencing a vast decline in habitat, due to urban development, timber (木对木) harvesting, and agricultural expansion. ’’Time is running out for the world’s biodiversity,” said Douglas Justice, associate director at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden. \"Every recent survey of

plants and animals in the wild points to this.\" He continued, “This is happening nearly everywhere that rarer maples exist. And because of climate change, the narrow habitats that support species at the tops of mountains are quickly disappearing.\"

The trees can be found in sub-tropical and tropical (赤道的)regions, as far south as Indonesia. The only species found in the UK, the field maple is not under threat. Not only are the trees a popular ornamental (装饰的)feature in parks and public spaces, but also they are a key part of the natural ecosystem in woodlands, as well as being an important timber crop in several countries.

China is home to the largest proportion (比例)of maples with 92 species. It has seen a number of trees become endangered due to urban expansion. Some 14 of the 23 maple trees at risk of extinction in the country are only found in China and have small populations and limited geographical ranges. “We still have an opportunity to save species from disappearance, but it will take expertise, resources and the cooperative efforts by the world's botanical gardens to make it work,\" Justice added.

One species in Mexico, the Acer binzayedii, is in \"desperate need of conversation\" despite only being discovered in 2017. \"It is at risk from climate change in its cloud forest habitat and threatened by grazing, logging, and forest fires,*' the report adds. The report recommends developing conversation plans, monitoring species currently not at risk to ensure populations are maintained (保 持),and adding those missing maple species to seed banks and the like.

BGCI (Botanic Gardens Conversation International) is now establishing a conversation program to address the conservation needs of maple species. Maple specialists will work together to develop comprehensive strategies to manage and deliver conservation action points for the species. 27. What is the major reason for maple trees' distinction? A. A lack of scientific research. B. The rarity of the new species . C. The losses of their habitats. D. Problems with the distribution.

28. What’s Justice's attitude to saving maple trees?

A. Hopeful. B. Skeptical. C. Reserved.

D. Negative.

29. What are the last two paragraphs intended to tell us? A. There is no guarantee of maintaining the tree populations. B. It can never be too late to join hands to protect the species. C. All maple trees of the species are on the edge of extinction. D. Effective measures should be taken to conserve maple trees. 30. What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A. Time is running out for maple trees B. Maple trees are vital to the ecosystem

C. Maple trees will stand tall in nature D. Climate change puts maple trees at risk 21---30 BCC ADB CADA

Today the Mirror launches a “Help a Child to Learn” campaign to help lockdown pupils with an enormous donation of £1 million from Britain's biggest teaching union. It aims to help every child get the education they deserve during the Covid crisis.

We are aiming to raise much needed cash for kids left working from home without the most basic items such as coloring pens, books and notepads. All the money raised will go towards essential equipment for younger children still too young for online learning. To donate to the appeal please click here.

An exclusive survey of more than 2,500 NEU (Northeastern University) members found 95%

were teaching students with limited or no access to learning resources at home. Four out of five members (81 %) are seeing families ask for extra support from their school or college for resources such as pens, paper and books. More than a quarter of teachers (27%) said half or more of their pupils were in this situation.

Some pupils are ashamed to admit they don't have the right equipment, damaging their confidence and sometimes leading to disruptive(破坏的)behavior. Schools are trying to help pupils but the need to keep schools Covid-secure is stressing more pressure on tight budgets, the union said.

The situation is believed to have worsened during the pandemic(流行病).55% of NEU members reported an increase in child poverty at their school or college since the start of the first lockdown in March last year.

People generally consider that friendship is reciprocal (相互的).But when we analyzed self-reported relationship surveys, we found that only about half of friendships are indeed reciprocal. These findings indicate a profound inability of people to know who their friends are.

This may seem like an interesting but minor finding, but this kind of asymmetric (不对称的) friendships has a major effect on the ability of an individual to convince others to cooperate or change their behavior. That’s because success depends on the ability to recruit friends to help at important times — in the spread of new behaviors, new ideas, and new methods.

Moreover, in recent years peer-support programs have become highly effective ways to make use of peer influence to support behavioral change of employees. One specific type of peer-support program is the “buddy system”. In this program, individuals are paired with another person (a buddy) with the responsibility of supporting them to change their behavior.

But our findings suggest that this misperception (错误认知)of friendships significantly limits the efforts buddy systems make to promote a behavioral change. What’s more, we’ve found that which way friendship is perceived between two people is also a factor. For example, we found that when a one-way friendship tie exists from the buddy (the person applying peer pressure) to the subject (the person receiving the pressure), programs

were more effective than when friendship tie was from the subject to the buddy. While it is best to have a reciprocal friendship, having a buddy who thinks of their subject as a friend is the next best relationship.

To overcome this limitation, we can’t rely on how the subject perceives the relationship with the buddy to create effectiveness. If we want to design a program, two simple findings can be applied to achieve behavioral change more effectively. The first is that we shouldn’t consider people with a high number of social ties as “influencers.” Second, we shouldn’t start by focusing on people who “know everyone” in the organization. 27. What does the underlined word “recruit” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. inform B. gather C. persuade D. employ

28. Which of the following findings of the “buddy system” program is TRUE? A. The wrong cognition of friendship restricts a behavioral change. B. The way friendship is perceived makes no difference in the program. C. Having a buddy who thinks of their subject as a friend is the best relationship. D. If the friendship tie was from the subject to the buddy, programs were more effective. 29. While designing a program, we should_____________. A. pair individuals with another person B. avoid involving those familiar with everyone C. rely on how the subject perceives the relationship D. consider people with a lot of social ties as influencers 30. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. What Influences Our Friendship? B. How Does Buddy System Work? C. What Determines Behavioral Change? D. Jason Sturm says he cannot remember what it was like to have two legs. For nearly 20 years now, Sturm has used a prosthesis (义肢). Stuim’s injury happened in March of2002 when he was taking part in a military training

exercise at Fort Drum. A bomb missed its target and exploded only two meters behind Sturm. Sturm survived, but lost his left leg forever.

As children grow up without a sense of innovation, they risk losing in the competitive fields of technology and business worldwide.

From a young age, all children have a natural desire to create. While the urge to create comes naturally to kids, creativity needs to be protected in order to grow. So, if you're concerned your child may not be getting a full serving of arts education, take action! Get in touch with your school principal to voice your concerns.

At home, help foster creativity by encouraging your child to let loose and color outside the lines. Help your child focus on the process of creating, not on the final product.
