My Big Chinese Culture Experience
Wow, I'm so excited to tell you about this amazing experience I just had! I entered an essay contest all about Chinese culture and traditions. It was hosted by our city's Chinese Cultural Center. At first, I wasn't sure if I wanted to enter because I thought it might be too hard. But my teacher Mrs. Chen encouraged me, saying it would be a great way to learn more about my heritage. I'm so glad I listened to her!
The first step was researching different aspects of Chinese culture to write my essay about. There was so much cool stuff to choose from! I looked at ancient Chinese philosophies like Confucianism and Taoism. I read about awesome festivals like Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival. I even found websites about traditional Chinese arts like calligraphy, kung fu, and making fancy knots out of strings. In the end, I decided to write my essay about Chinese folk tales and legends. I've always loved hearing those classic stories with brave heroes, sneaky
tricksters, and magical creatures. My favorite is the tale of Mulan, the brave woman warrior who disguised herself as a man to fight in the army for her family.
Writing the essay was a lot harder than I expected. I had so many facts and stories I wanted to include! I wrote a few drafts, getting help from Mrs. Chen and even my parents to organize my ideas clearly. I made sure to explain some of the main values and lessons found in Chinese folktales, like bravery, loyalty, and using your wits. I gave a bunch of examples from famous stories too. My final draft was five pages long – the maximum allowed! A few weeks later, it was time for the contest event itself. I was pretty nervous, but mostly really excited. The Chinese Cultural Center was decorated so beautifully with red lanterns, golden tassels, and huge printed calligraphy banners. When I arrived, lots of other kids around my age were already there. Some were Chinese like me, but others were from all different backgrounds which I thought was really cool. We had to wear our nicest clothes to be respectful. I wore a fancy silk shirt my grandparents got me.
First, we watched a couple of amazing performances of traditional Chinese music and dances. There were these two older men playing an ancient flute duet that sounded so pretty
and mystical. Then a group of younger dancers performed a ribbon dance where they leaped and twirled these long, flowing ribbons while smiling hugely. It looked really hard but they made it seem effortless and graceful. I couldn't stop staring at the ribbons rippling through the air!
Then it was time for us contestants to take the stage one-by-one and read our essays out loud. I was pretty anxious waiting for my turn, but I tried calming breaths like we learned in school. When I finally walked up there, the spotlight was super bright in my eyes so I couldn't see the audience very well. But I took a deep breath and began reading my essay, trying to use a clear, poised voice. About halfway through, I started feeling more comfortable and got into a rhythm. By the end, I actually felt proud and confident! A bunch of people clapped which felt awesome.
After all the essays were read, the judges had to take a break to decide on the winners. So we all got to eat a delicious Chinese dinner banquet of dishes like kung pao chicken, beef and broccoli, dumplings, and more. I tried a couple new foods and it was all so yummy and flavorful. Eating with friends and trying fun new things was one of the best parts!
Finally, it was time to announce the contest winners. I was super nervous again, but tried not to get my hopes up too much since there were a lot of great essays. When they called out my name for third place, I was completely shocked! I couldn't believe it at first. I went up on stage and they gave me a little trophy, a book about Chinese legends, and a gift certificate. Even though I didn't get first place, I felt incredibly proud and accomplished. All that hard work researching, writing drafts, and practicing my public speaking had paid off.
On the ride home, I couldn't stop looking at my trophy and reading from the book. My parents and Mrs. Chen were so happy for me. They said my essay really captured the wisdom,
imagination, and beauty of Chinese folktales. I felt so thankful to my family, my teacher, and the Chinese Cultural Center for giving me this amazing opportunity to connect more with my culture. Even though it took a lot of effort, it was definitely worth it to learn so much and be part of such a special, meaningful event. I can't wait to enter the essay contest again next year – maybe I'll get first place!

My Chinese Cultural Writing Competition Adventure
Wow, what an amazing experience I just had! I entered this super cool writing competition all about Chinese culture and it was the best. Let me tell you aalll about it!
It started a few months ago when my English teacher, Mrs. Wang, told our class about this great opportunity. She said there was going to be a big writing contest where we could write stories, poems, or essays all about the awesome culture of China. As soon as she said that, I knew I just had to enter!
You see, I absolutely love learning about the rich history and traditions of my country. From the ancient philosophers and inventions, to the mouthwatering cuisines and colorful festivals, Chinese culture has always fascinated me. I'm constantly bugging my parents to teach me more about our heritage. So getting a chance to write all about it? Sign me up!
Mrs. Wang said the top entries would even get prizes and be published in a book! How cool is that? I could be a real author before even leaving elementary school. I just had to come up with the perfect idea for my writing piece.
After days of brainstorming, I finally settled on writing a short story about the history and importance of the Spring Festival. It's my favorite holiday, filled with so many fun traditions like decorating, feasting, lighting firecrackers, and giving out red
envelopes. I wanted to bring all those vibrant experiences to life on the page.
For weeks, I worked super hard on my story after school. I had to get every descriptive detail just right to transport the reader into the Chinese New Year celebrations. Outlining, drafting, revising, editing - the whole writing process! I even asked my grandparents to share some of their childhood Spring Festival memories to make my story feel authentic.
Finally, it was ready. My epic tale about a brother and sister excitedly preparing for and experiencing all the Spring Festival festivities. I was so proud of all my effort! Mrs. Wang seemed really impressed when I turned it in too.
And then...we waited. Hundreds of other students from all across the country had entered the competition as well. The judges had their work cut out for them, reading every single submission. I tried not to get my hopes up too much, but I had a good feeling about my story.
A few months later, the big day arrived! An official awards ceremony was held for the writing competition. Imagine how shocked I was when they announced that my Spring Festival story had been selected as one of the winners in the elementary school division! My jaw dropped to the floor.
They invited me up on stage in front of this huge crowd of people to receive my prize - a shiny medal, a certificate, and a copy of the book featuring my story published inside. I even got to read my winning entry out loud to everyone! It was SO COOL. Afterwards, people kept coming up to congratulate me and my family. They all loved my vivid descriptions of Chinese New Year and said my story did an amazing job capturing the spirit of the holiday. Some even told me I was a talented young writer. Eeek, I was über flattered!
That's when it really hit me - my work had been chosen as one of the best for celebrating and promoting the beauty of Chinese culture. By entering this competition, I got to share a cherished tradition that means so much to me with tons of other people. How awesome is that?
I learned that appreciating your cultural heritage is so important. It gives you a sense of identity and connects you to your roots. But it's also meant to be shared with others to spread knowledge and understanding. Cultures may be different, but exchanging our stories brings the world closer together. From this whole experience, I now have a greater passion than ever for writing and for Chinese culture. I can't wait to learn more about my ancestry's customs, history, arts, and more. Who
knows, maybe I'll even grow up to be an author sharing China's rich traditions with the whole world!
I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to enter this writing competition. I got to pour my heart into creatively celebrating my culture. And being selected as a winner? That just motivated me to keep exploring my heritage and polishing my writing skills. Experiences like these are what make childhood so amazing and memorable.
I'm never going to forget this Chinese cultural writing competition adventure. Receiving that award on stage was a dream come true. But the greatest prize was honoring the beauty and significance of my ancestors' way of life. I hope more kids my age participate in traditions like this. Because becoming proud of your cultural roots? That's a gift that keeps on giving forever.

My Awesome Experience at the Chinese Culture Writing Contest!
Hi everyone! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I just had the coolest experience and I can't wait to tell you all about it! A few months ago, my English teacher Mrs. Chang told our class
about this really neat writing contest all about Chinese culture. When she first mentioned it, I wasn't sure if I wanted to enter or not. Writing about ancient China sounded kind of boring to me at first. But then Mrs. Chang told us we could write about anything related to Chinese culture - food, holidays, legends, you name it! That's when I got really interested and excited.
You see, my family is Chinese-American and we celebrate a lot of Chinese holidays and traditions at home. My favorite is definitely the Lunar New Year! I love getting new red envelopes with money, eating all the yummy dumplings and noodles, and celebrating with my cousins. Chinese New Year is so fun and vibrant. When Mrs. Chang said we could write about that for the contest, I knew I had to enter!
The first step was coming up with an idea for what to write about specifically. I brainstormed a bunch of different options - maybe I could write a story about the Nian monster and how the New Year traditions started? Or I could describe all the tasty foods my grandma makes for our New Year feast? There were so many possibilities! After talking to my parents, I ultimately decided to interview my grandparents and write about their childhood New Year memories and traditions growing up in Beijing.
Next up was doing lots and lots of research. I spent weeks after school in the library reading books about Chinese history and culture. I found a bunch of really interesting information about how the Lunar New Year started and all the symbolism behind the celebrations. For example, did you know that red is considered a lucky color in China because it scares away evil spirits? That's why we give out red envelopes and decorate with red lanterns! Mind-blowing, right?
My favorite part though was interviewing my grandparents over FaceTime. They are both such amazing storytellers and taught me so much cool stuff. Like when my grandpa was little, he remembers everyone wearing brand new clothes for New Year's Day because it symbolized starting fresh for the new year. And my grandma told me that as a kid, she looked forward to the giant feasts and trying to stay up all night long to watch the new year arrive (even though she never made it past midnight!). After gathering all my research, it was time to start writing my essay. I'll be honest, getting started was kind of tough. I knew I wanted to capture the exciting and festive energy of Lunar New Year, but I wasn't sure how to put that into words at first. My parents and Mrs. Chang gave me some great tips though - use lots of vivid descriptions, tell personal stories and anecdotes, and
try to make the reader feel like they're actually there celebrating. Those suggestions really helped a lot.
I worked so hard on writing and rewriting my essay over the next few weeks. I must have gone through 10 different drafts at least! I just wanted it to be absolutely perfect. When I finally had a draft I was proud of, I spent a whole weekend working on typing it up neatly, designing cover pages, and putting together all the research and interview notes as appendices. Looking back now, that was kind of over-the-top for a 4th grader! But I was determined to make my entry look super professional.
Finally, the big day came to submit my essay to the contest. I was crazy nervous but also really excited! After reading my essay one last time, I carefully slid it into a manila envelope and rushed it over to the contest office right before the deadline. Phew, made it! Over the next few weeks, I tried not to think about the contest too much so I wouldn't get my hopes up. But I had worked so unbelievably hard on my entry that a tiny part of me couldn't help but dream about maybe winning.
A month or so later, Mrs. Chang got an email from the contest organizers. They were going to have an awards ceremony soon to announce the winners! My heart started pounding. What if I had won something? I couldn't even imagine.
When the big day arrived, my whole family came along to the ceremony. There were kids from schools all across the city there. I was shaking with anticipation!
After what felt like forever, they started calling out the names of the winners. First they announced the honorable mentions, then third place, then second place. With each name that wasn't mine, my heart sank a little more into my chest. But then, the most amazing thing happened. They called MY NAME for the first place prize in the elementary school division!! I had won the entire contest!
I jumped up and down screaming with joy as my parents cheered. I couldn't believe it! All that hard work had paid off in the best way possible. As I walked up onto the huge stage to get my award, I felt like a total superstar. Holding that gigantic first place trophy, I knew I'd never forget this experience for the rest of my life.
Not only did I win an awesome prize, but I also got to read my essay out loud in front of the whole auditorium. It was incredibly nerve-wracking but also so cool! As I spoke about my family's New Year traditions, the symbolism behind the celebrations, and my grandparents' sweet stories, I could see people in the audience smiling and nodding along. When I
finished, everyone cheered and clapped so loudly. I felt like a published author!
Winning that writing contest was one of the proudest moments of my life so far. But aside from the first place trophy, the whole experience taught me so much more. I got to dive deep into my own Chinese-American culture and heritage in a way I'd never done before. Reading all those books and interviewing my grandparents made me appreciate the richness of Chinese traditions. And spending weeks and weeks working so hard on my essay showed me what I can accomplish when I'm truly passionate about something.
Since the contest, I've tried to learn even more about Chinese culture by reading legends, watching documentaries, and practicing Chinese calligraphy. I know there's still so much more for me to discover about my heritage. Who knows, maybe I'll enter another cultural writing contest someday! But even if I don't, this experience will always be one of my most special childhood memories. It combined my love of writing, my family history, and my budding curiosity about the world. I'mEndlessly grateful I got the chance to explore all of that through the Awesome Chinese Culture Writing Contest!

My Super Awesome Experience at the Chinese Culture Essay Contest!
Hi friends! I'm so excited to tell you about the really cool thing I got to do a few weeks ago. Our teacher told our class that there was going to be a big Chinese culture essay contest happening at our school. The contest was open to all elementary school kids and we could write about anything related to Chinese culture - like holidays, food, traditions, or whatever we wanted! The winners would even get prizes and get their essays published in a book. How neat is that?!
At first, I wasn't sure if I wanted to enter or not. Writing a whole essay seemed like a lot of work. But then I remembered how much I love learning about Chinese culture. My parents are Chinese immigrants and they've taught me so many fascinating things about our rich heritage. I decided this would be the perfect chance to share what I've learned with others.
I spent a long time brainstorming ideas for my essay topic. There were just so many possibilities! I could write about the colorful Chinese New Year celebrations with red envelopes, fireworks, and lion dances. Or the mouth-watering cuisine like dumplings, noodles, and Peking duck. Or the ancient philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism. Or the beautiful
Chinese calligraphy art. I finally landed on writing about traditional Chinese festivals and holidays.
My title was \"A Year of Festivals: Celebrating the Chinese Calendar.\" I started off by explaining how the traditional Chinese calendar is lunisolar, meaning it follows both the cycles of the moon and sun. This creates a cool calendar where the dates change slightly each year compared to standard western calendars. I thought that was a neat fact to kick things off. Then I went through all the major festivals and holidays one by one, describing the origins, customs, foods, and activities for each one. For Chinese New Year, I wrote about giving red envelopes with money, watching parades with dancing lions and dragons, and eating reunion dinner with your whole extended family. For the Lantern Festival, I talked about the pretty lanterns, trying to solve those tricky riddles, and eating tasty little tangyuan (sweet rice balls).
For the Qingming Festival, I described burning fake paper money and leaving out food for our ancestors' spirits. For the Dragon Boat Festival, I wrote all about the exciting dragon boat races and eating those yummy sticky rice dumplings filled with egg yolks, pork, and bamboo leaves. I made sure to cover the customs for the Hungry Ghost Festival of leaving food offerings
for lonely spirits. And of course the whole fall season is packed with holidays - the Mid-Autumn Festival with mooncakes, lanterns, and carefully preserved pomelo fruits.
I tried to make my essay as vivid and descriptive as possible, really painting a picture for the reader of all the sights, smells, sounds, and flavors of each holiday. I worked really hard on it for weeks, doing tons of research and multiple drafts before it was finally ready to submit. I was honestly super proud of how it turned out! Keeping my fingers crossed that the judges would like it too.
When the day of the contest arrived, I was crazy nervous but also really excited. School let out early that day and all the student writers gathered in the big auditorium. The judges were teachers and some special guests who were experts on Chinese culture. One by one, the contestants went up on stage to read their essays out loud. I remember clutching my printed essay pages tightly and practicing my deep breathing to stay calm when it was my turn.
I walked up to the microphone and looked out at the big crowd of people, feeling a bit shaky. But as soon as I started reading my work, I relaxed and it just flowed out of me naturally. I did different voices for quotes and expression when describing
certain things. The audience laughed at some of my jokes and \"oohed\" over the beautiful imagery. When I got to the end and looked up, I saw people clapping and smiling happily at me. Some were even wiping away tears! That's when I knew my essay had really resonated with them.
After all the essays were read, the judges gathered to deliberate and decide on the winners. It seemed like forever until they finally returned to announce the results. When they called out my name for first place, I was absolutely over the moon! I couldn't believe I had won the whole thing. Getting that shiny first place trophy, certificate, and prize money was just the cherry on top. But way cooler was knowing how much I had enlightened people about the amazing culture I come from.
Holding my award up on that stage, I felt a huge surge of pride in my Chinese heritage. As an immigrant kid growing up in America, it's sometimes easy to feel caught between two worlds and cultures. But by sharing my traditions and values through this essay, I realized those two worlds don't have to be so separate. I can embrace the best of both right here at home. The warm response from the audience also assured me that everyone else sees the beauty in Chinese culture too and wants to understand it better.
Since my essay will be published soon, I can't wait until it reaches an even bigger audience. I hope reading about these vibrant holidays and festivals will open people's eyes to the rich tapestry of Chinese culture. I dream of it maybe even inspiring some to attend one of these events themselves someday! At the very least, I know I've done my small part to spread awareness and appreciation for these traditions that are so meaningful to me.
This whole experience with the Chinese culture essay contest has been so rewarding. Not only did I learn a ton through my research, but I got to proudly share my heritage with others. I gained more confidence in my writing abilities and public speaking too. Most importantly though, I walked away with a profound sense of my own cultural identity and determination to keep celebrating where I came from. This is just the first of many times I'll advocate for Chinese cultural education and representation. Watch out world, here I come!

My Super Cool Experience at the Chinese Culture Writing Competition
Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm in the 5th grade. I just had the most awesome experience that I can't wait to tell you all about!
A few weeks ago, my English teacher Mrs. Wong told our class about this really cool writing competition all about Chinese culture. She said we could write an essay, poem, short story, or any kind of creative writing piece as long as it was about some aspect of Chinese culture and traditions. The best entries would even get prizes and get to read their work at a big ceremony! As soon as I heard about it, I knew I just had to enter. You see, I'm Chinese-American and I've always loved learning about the rich culture and history of China. My parents have taught me so much, like how to write some Chinese characters, amazing legends and fables, traditional games, awesome holidays like Chinese New Year, and more. But I wanted to dig even deeper and share my passion through my writing. This competition sounded perfect for me!
I spent the next few weeks thinking really hard about what I wanted to write about. There were so many fascinating topics to choose from - I couldn't decide if I wanted to write about ancient Chinese philosophy, masterpieces of pottery and bronze artwork, the memories of delicious homecooked Chinese meals, or
something completely different. In the end, I settled on writing a short fictional story about the origins of the Chinese zodiac animals and the zodiac's importance in Chinese culture. Doing my research for the story was super fun! I re-read some of my favorite storybooks about the zodiac animals' great race. I asked my parents to retell the tales they grew up hearing from my grandparents about how the zodiac order was decided. And I looked up cool facts online about how the zodiac influences things like what careers and lifestyles are auspicious for each zodiac sign. My uber-creative brain was bursting with ideas for an entertaining story that could teach about this important Chinese tradition.
Finally, after lots of brainstorming and several drafts, I had my completed story ready. I titled it \"The Greatest Race\" and made sure to include vivid details about the 12 zodiac animals and their epic journey to win the coveted year namings from the Jade Emperor. From the diligent rat hitching a crafty ride to the procrastinating pig almost being left behind, I tried to bring their personalities to life. I even chose to write the ending in a mystical cliffhanger, dropping hints that the zodiac animals might be plotting a rematch race in the future! My tale mixed fantasy, humor, and fascinating zodiac insights.
When the due date arrived, I carefully printed out my story and had my parents help ensure there were no spelling or grammar mistakes. I decorated the cover page with drawings of the 12 zodiac animals and tied it all together with a shiny red ribbon.
Handing in my hard work gave me a feeling of pride I'll never forget. I had taken a meaningful cultural tradition from China's heritage and celebrated it through my own creativity and passion for storytelling. No matter if I ended up winning the competition or not, I knew I had created something special that made me feel connected to my roots.
A couple weeks later, the judging results were finally announced. When Mrs. Wong started listing off the names of the top entries for our grade level...I heard MY name get called for an honorable mention! I could hardly believe my ears at first - my story had been recognized by the judges out of so many fantastic submissions. I felt like jumping for joy!
On the day of the awards ceremony, I went with my family to the big auditorium where it was being held. The room was decked out in bright red tablecloths, traditional Chinese lanterns, rainbow panels with calligraphic designs, and more. We got to see incredible dance performances, musical acts spotlighting
ancient Chinese instruments, and other amazingly talented students sharing their writing and artwork.
When it was my turn to go up on stage and read my story's opening paragraphs, I had some jittery butterflies in my stomach. But as soon as I started speaking into the microphone and saw all the encouraging smiles from the audience, I relaxed. I threw myself into narrating the zodiac animals' adventures with energy, humor, and drama. People laughed at the funny parts and beamed with delight at the twists and cliffhanger ending. Reading my writing out loud and having people react so positively filled me with glorious pride and confidence. After the ceremony, so many people came up to congratulate me. They loved the clever storyline, excellent vocabulary, and beautifully illustrated cover I had made. I couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear! Even cooler, some adults who worked for Chinese cultural centers asked if I could come read my story at other events sometime. For real - me, a 5th grader, getting fan requests already!
That whole experience was just so unbelievably amazing in every way possible. Not only did I get to unleash my limitless creativity and indulge my deep adoration for Chinese heritage,
but I was rewarded for my efforts. The competition made me feel empowered, celebrated, and proud to be Chinese-American. I know that day was just the start of my journey to connect more with my roots and share my passion for Chinese culture through the written word. Who knows - maybe I'll end up becoming an author someday and writing enchanting novels that spread understanding of China's wonders! Wherever my talents take me, I'll never forget the spectacular feeling of accomplishment from the Chinese cultural writing competition. It gave this elementary school kid the self-belief that my voice and stories truly matter.
