The reading notes of Wuthering Heights

The book named Wuthering Heights(呼啸山庄) is a very famous book in world literature, whose writer is Emily Bronte. She is a very famous and outstanding poem and novel writer in nineteen century in England. She was born in 1818 and died in 1848. It is no wonder that she had a very short life. But she use her wonderful intelligent to decorate her short life , at last her life become more beautiful than other life. Though the Wuthering Heights is the only novel that she had written in her living life ,just this book lid a very fame in world literature. She also has two outstanding sisters, one is Charlotte Bronte, the other is Anne Bronte. The two ladies are also famous writers. Charlotte had written a book called “June Eyre”, Anne had written a book named “Agnes Grey” . They are called “three sisters of Bronte”. To be frank ,if Emily had not died at a so young age, she must leave more important and beautiful writings to stew our history.

The novel is introducing a vengeance story about love, wealth, statue and the complex(复杂的) emotion among people. It happened between Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange(画眉山庄), and it implicated several generations. The avenger in this book is Heathcliff. He is a poor and little black homeless boy at first. Then he was taken in by the Mr E arnshaw , the owner of Wuthering Heights. Mr Earnshaw is a very kind man and have a quite happy family. He loved little

Heathcliff more than his own children, this made his own son Hindley very angry. So he often treat Heathcliff very badly and curse him. But because of Mr Earnshaw ’s protection, Heathcliff still stay in Wuthering Heights. However Mr Earnshaw ’s daughter Catherine is a very beautiful and attractive girl. She like Heathcliff and Heathcliff love her very much. In order to stay with her , Heathcliff put off all the bad treatments. But as we all know in that society, the thought of statue and wealth are very important in people ’mind. Catherine is not an exception to the rule. Beside good looks, she also is a very overbearing and unreasonable girl. For her noblest original, she can’t bear poor and lowly. This fact decides the result of their love. On one occasional situation, Catherine and Heathcliff went to Thrushcross Grange. The son of the owner of Thrushcross Grange Edgar fell in love with Catherine at the first sight. Edgar ’wonderful and gentle attitude left a very good impressure in Catherine ’mind, and this made Catherine began to hate humble(低贱的) Heathcliff. but Heathcliff didn’t care ,he still loved her as much as before. However ,it was the conversation between Catherine and the housekeeper that really hurt Heathcliff ’heart. Those words overruled(毁灭) Heathcliff ’love and lit the fire of vengeance in Heathcliff ’mind. In order to revenge, he disappeared for several years. When he came back, he became a very successful businessman with a lot of wealth. At that time Catherine

and Edgar had already got married and Hindley also had already had a son named Hallaton. Heathcliff carried on his vengeance plan. First, he occupied all of the wealth in Wuthering Heights, and then in order to occupy Thrushcross Grange he cheated Edgar ’sister Elizabath and made her marry him. He loved but also hatred Catherine. He didn’t want her to live a happy live, so he tried his best to break her life. Before long Catherine passed away with leaving a daughter to Edgar. Elizabath left a son named Linton. At last Heathcliff looted Catherine ’s daughter and forced her married his son Linton. He treated them very bad. Because if little Linton died, both the Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange will belong to Heathcliff. Although Heathcliff become the winner in this story, because of the love and regret for Catherine, he never felt really happy. He died with lonely and pity. The Wuthering Heights and Thrush Grange are finally back to normal, but it ’s no wonder that they can never be as flourishing(繁荣的) as before.

In my opinion, this vengeance story reflect the weak part in people ’s minds., and also reflect the truth of the society. Because of the big lure(诱惑) of money, almost all the people live for the wealth. Under this ground, Heathcliff is a bad but pitiable(可悲的) person. He was taken in by the Wuthering Heights, for ordinary people, he should have pay back to this help. But his love for Catherine destroied it. He loved Catherine so much that this love born hate. In his later life there

is no love and happiness. It’s him who ended Catherine’s life. For this point, he is pitiable. He was hoodwinked by vengeance and wealth, and these forced him to throw over his true heart and made so many bad things. If he hadn’t been treated so badly. He may not become that terrible and scareful person. Catherine is a lady who suffered the society rank difference thought very badly. She loved Heathcliff, but the pool statue, poverty and bad culture made a big difference in her mind. She thought he didn’t equal to her statue. In her later life even she got married with a wealthy husband, but she didn’t live happily, finally she died with the love and regret for Heathcliff. In fact it was her who made Heathcliff begin his vengeance plan. Hindley is a very hateful and bad people. He used all the ways to hurt Heathcliff and defend his own wealth, but this result in his unfortunate later life and no wealth at last. Hallaton, Cathy, little Linton are the victims because of the love and hate among last generations. Cathy suffered a cold treat because of Heathcliff ’s hate for her mother. Hallton received a bad treat because of Heathcliff ’ vengeance for his father. For little Linton, Heathcliff just regarded him as a tool to help him to snatch the wealth of Thrush Grange. Of course they are not the person who should be blame to and respond to those complex matters, but in that society their bitter experience is inevitable(不可避免的).

From this story I got some important lessons and some thoughts.

First, love is so necessary but it doesn’t the all things of your life. You can chose to love a person but it doesn’t mean the person you love should love you, too. If there are some reasons that the person shouldn’t love you, you should forgive him and wish him happy. Second, enmity(仇恨) is a very bad thing. It brought too much hurt to other people. Even though you beat the people who you hate, but the life with enmity must be very sad, unhappy and terrible. Third , never try to retaliate(报复) people who ever hurt you. Vengeance often wastes too much time of a people ’s life, and during these time they must put all the energy to think about his plan. He didn’t know how to spend daliy life formally. Once he finished his plan , he may lost the power and aim for life. So life may become meaningless to him. The last but most important lesson is to get on well with others. Not only in ancient time but in also modern time, there are rank difference and the disparity(差距) between poor and rich. Many people don’t want to meet with people who is not as outstanding or generous as themselves. Also they treat those poor people very badly. This led to many very bad situations in our society. For example, offense(犯罪) , racial and society discrimination, even war. It breaks the harmony of the world. Just like the vengeance story in the book “Wuthering heights”. Hindley and Catherine ’s bad treat led to Heathcliff ’s vengeance. People should get on and treat other people well to keep the harmony and peace of the

society, even the world.

To tell you the truth, “Wuthering Heights” is a book which I had read many times, but during every time I read it I had some new and important feelings. I can not imagine how Emily could write such a wonderful book. For her , this book is her first novel and she didn’t have a little experience about love and enmity. When she wrote this book, she is just a little girl. There is no wonder that she is a very outstanding lady worth to admire by every people forever.
